HP TouchPad Tablet Rumor Put To Rest

Although the HP TouchPad was unveiled earlier this year just before the Mobile World Congress, Hewlett-Packard has been quiet about the release date – until now. There had been a slew of rumors all over the internet putting the ship date in late march.

But at an all day investor meeting/press conference earlier this week, Leo Apotheker, the CEO of HP announced to an eager crowd that the HP TouchPad Tablet WiFi version could start shipping before June and would be part of wave of launches.

Apotheker announced an aggressive webOS plan as well.  He said HP ultimately hopes to ship around 100 million webOS devices. WebOS is the operating system on the HP TouchPad Tablet. HP got the rights to webOS when it bought Palm last year.

Although final specifications for the HP TouchPad have yet to come out, some of the anticipated features shown on Amazon include:

  • 9.7” Multi -Touch Screen Display (1024*768 pixels.)
  • Weighing in at 1.6lbs
  • HP webOS Mobile Operating System as discussed above
  • Dual Core 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon Processor; 1 GB RAM
  • 16GB or 32GB Storage = $100 more for 32 GB
  • Wireless 802.11b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • Flash support
  • 1.3 mega-pixel Front-facing Camera – video chatting capability

An interesting note. At the press conference there was video about the HP TouchPad Tablet. In that video, the device representing the TouchPad actually had a rear facing camera as well. Only time will tell.

No news or time-line on the HP TouchPad 3G either.
