HP TouchPad Tablet
Hewlett-Packard just announced their newest product; The HP TouchPad Tablet. The screen size will be 9.7 inches XGA capacitive, multi-touch screen – the same as the Apple IPad. It will use Qaulcomm’s 1.2GHz Dual-Core Snapdragon. Screen resolution, 1,024×768, is comparable to other tablets of that size. It will come in two flavors; WiFi and 3G. GPS will be available only with the 3G version. Both will have a 1.3MP front facing camera for video conferencing. They will also have Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.
The HP TouchPad tablet will run WebOS, fresh from Hewlett-Packard’s purchase of Palm in April 2010. Originally used for the Palm smartphones, it will be full multitasking and HP will bring it to the tablets for the summer release. They plan to bring it to desktops and laptops sometime after that.
Qualcomm announced details about its new 1.2GHz dual-core APQ8060 Snapdragon processor for the HP TouchPad tablet. The Adreno 220 graphics processor inside the 8060 allows for the rendering of up to 16 MP still images, and 1080p HD video capture; Video playback up to 30 frames per second. Also,included is built-in eighth-generation gps engine with Standalone-GPS and Assisted-GPS modes.
“With the APQ 8060 and Adreno 220 GPU, the HP TouchPad delivers a high-performing and fluid multitasking user interface, as well as offers game and multimedia application developers a high-performance environment for their applications,” said Jon Oakes, director of TouchPad product marketing at HP.
In addition, the Snapdragon chip is also capable of “console-quality gaming,” as well as “full web browsing with Adobe Flash 10″
Rounding out the specs; accelerometer, compass (magnetometer), and gyroscope; 16GB or 32GB internal storage, your choice. It will have the standard microUSB connector with USB 2.0 Hi-Speed; 3.5mm stereo headset, internal speakers. Wireless connection will be 802.11b/g/n.
Amazon announced that it will have a free Kindle app for HP WebOS tailored for TouchPad, giving access to hundreds of thousand titles in the Kindle store.
Although Hewlett-Packard gave lots of details, the left out the one very important one – the price. HP plans to announce pricing for the HP TouchPad Tablet in the next quarter.
